Improving Health Care Quality

Integrated Delivery Systems

In its 2001 report, Crossing the Quality Chasm, the Institute of Medicine argued that the American health care delivery system is in need of fundamental change and that simply “trying harder” will not be enough to address the problems of effectiveness, safety, efficiency, timeliness, patient centeredness, and equity that exist. IHP’s work in this area focuses on policies that could encourage care integration and examines what aspects of existing integrated delivery systems can be adapted for less integrated settings.
