Improving Health Care Quality

Medicaid

The Medicaid program is the primary source of health insurance coverage for low-income Americans, providing health and long-term care services to 55 million families, people with disabilities, and the elderly. Although children account for about half of Medicaid enrollment, the bulk of the program's spending is for beneficiaries with multiple chronic conditions. Focusing on improving care and outcomes for these individuals offers the best opportunities to improve quality and reduce costs for the program. IHP's initial work in this realm focuses on these opportunities, including the role of integrated approaches to care (rather than disease-by-disease management) and how knowledge about what works for this population can be generated, disseminated, and translated more effectively.
